Employee Appreciation Day: Our Leaders Say “Thank You”

Posted by March 2, 2020

We have a great team of hardworking, dedicated employees at United Concordia Dental. Celebrating them isn’t a hard thing to do. That’s why Employee Appreciation Day is such a big deal around here!

THANK YOU to each and every person who works for United Concordia. Your commitment does not go unnoticed, and your contribution is very much appreciated. In fact, we reached out to senior leaders to share a bit about why they are honored to work with you!

What is your favorite part about working with/leading your team?

“I work with an amazing group of people, many of whom have been with the company for decades. Since turnover in our department is practically unheard of, each individual is an expert and motivated to do their very best. They take great pride in doing what is necessary for the good of our customers, our department and, in turn, our company.”

– Quinn Dufurrena, DDS, JD
Chief Dental Officer
Department: Dental Clinical Review

“I enjoy the level of collaboration that my team has. They are a resource for not only each other but others throughout the company. Each of them has a unique opinion and it’s a great blend when we come together to help move a project forward. They are also very funny and keep me laughing!”

– Ellen Corbet
Director,
RFP/Sales Messaging

“The people. My team is my “work” family. While many of us are very different from one another and vary in age and interests, we work well together, support and care about one another.”

– Nicole Womer
Supervisor,
Enrollment & Billing

“[My favorite part of working with my team is] their passion and dedication to excellence. Each team member is laser focused on Blue plan partners and in order to succeed, they effectively collaborate with the wealth of talent throughout United Concordia, HM Health Solutions and Highmark.”

– Kurtis S. Shook
Director, Strategic Partnerships

What quality does your team display that you are most appreciative of? Why?

“The quality that I am most appreciative of is “trust.” I know and trust that my staff is committed to the highest standards every single day. Being responsible, respecting each other and honesty are all key components to success. Developing trust with your staff and peers establishes a good working environment. One of my favorite quotes is by basketball Coach Phil Jackson: “Good teams become great ones when the members trust each other enough to surrender the ME for WE.” This is something I have used in my personal coaching career as well as my professional leadership style here at United Concordia.”

– Christina Harner
Supervisor,
BES & Claims Input – Integrated Delivery Support

“[The quality I am most appreciative of is] direct, honest and open communication. It didn’t come naturally for the team to communicate freely. We worked through the discomfort of conflict, but ultimately having difficult conversations allows us to improve. We often refer to a quote by Colin Powell to remind us there is a time to challenge and a time to support: “When debating an issue, loyalty means giving me your honest opinion, whether you think I’ll like it or not. Disagreement, at this state, stimulates me. But once a decision is made, the debate ends. From that point on, loyalty means executing the decision as if it were your own.”

The second part of that quote speaks to trust. I know that my team doesn’t always agree on the outcome of a situation. But everyone has taken time to share his/her concerns, and is a part of the discussion before a decision is made. Once we move forward, I know that the team will support the change wholeheartedly. This trust makes working together easy.”

– Jessica Brown
Director,
Government Business Operations

“Teamwork! I know it is cliché but it is the truth. Leading them is actually very easy to me as a director because they work so well together. I truly couldn’t ask for a better team!”

– Kristen S. Smith
Director,
Dental Network Operations

“Resilience. Our customer’s needs are continuously changing and my team quickly adapts. They listen to our customer’s requests, are innovative in solving problems and remain focused on continuous process improvement.”

– Gretchen Alphonso
Manager;
Member and Provider Experience

If you could say one thing to your team on Employee Appreciation Day, what would it be?

“Thank you for making United Concordia a remarkable place to be. Although our business goals are important, how we treat each other in the pursuit of those goals is just as important. Thank you for sharing the best of yourselves every day.”

– Rhonda Greenstreet
VP of Sales Strategy & Operations,
Sales Operations and Development

“I am nothing without my team, so I would like to say thank you, a million times over, for the dedication, hard work, and passion that they exemplify. I am so very proud to be a part of a high-functioning group of diverse individuals.”

– Chris Therkildsen

“I want to thank all of you, not only for the valuable work you do on a daily basis, but for the support you provide me and each other. All of you play such an important role in the department, and each one of you make the company what it is… I sincerely appreciate all of your hard work and dedication.”

– Lisa Rudy;
